Jessica; photograph

This is the recent picture of a person with River blindness that was taken in Afrian village. River blindness is an infection caused by bite from infected black fly. This desease is also called Onchocerciasis, and it has been spread through all over African villages, threatening People's lives.
I believe the main reason people in third world countries have these kinds of deseases is POVERTY. Since they have no access to get health care due to the lack of financial support, they have lost many of their lives from illnesses. In the picture, a little boy is guiding the man with Onchocerciasis which make me feel agonizing. Even the picture does not have any violent aspect, it greatly shows their miserable and painful lives. The photographer took this picture, because he wanted to convey us how numerous people around us in the world are suffering and living painfully as we can not imagene.
Since the effect of photograph is to visualize certain massage to the viewer, we can understand the photographer's intention at once.

Poverty: Music, by Lucky

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=tOVRdHAEWdM

This time i looked at a video that is played and orgaized by OXJAM. it is a music group and they did a event that is titled MAP (Music Against Poverty). MUSIC AGAINST POVERTY is a project create by Evelise Goncalves to help African people to Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, Achieve primary education and Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. In 2008 will mark the first year of the new festival, the "Africa United Reggae Festival. The festival will take place in Accra, Ghana, West Africa during the first weekend of February 2008. Artists from all over the world and Africa will come together to share their passion for eradicating poverty.

The event brings forth many spectators and sponsors that will greatfully donate in order to fight against poverty. The music played in the conert are genearlly relate to the theme "poverty." This is an effective mass media that will let people know that there are people in Africa and all over the world that have nothing. Goncalves hopes that people would realize the need to help the poor. I hope people would gain new thoughts and come to the sense to donate at least $1 a year.
The music is effective in overall and it has gathered people successfully in the past.

Chris - internet - Poverty2

As I was looking for an internet article on poverty, i came across an interesting story of a person that was in poverty. This person's mom is from Mexico, and came to America as an illegal immigrant. She had left Los Angeles to avoid her criminal-related father. Now, the fact that his person is an illegal immigrant, immediately tells me that his family left Mexico for a person; to make money. I'm not surprised that an illegal immigrant came to America to make money. After all, America is "the land of all dream." However, this person, Henry Cejudo, is rather a sucessful one. He was the first one at age of 21 to win the gold medal for 121-pound freestyle restling.

I can not imagine how hard it would be to get an olympic gold medal when one is in poverty. As far as I know, there are hardly anyone that could be so sucessful when he was in poverty. There is a model called a poverty cycle. Basically, what it is is that people lack education, money, house, and health. Therefore, the person can not get enough money to pay for education, shelter, and their health all at the same time. Most of the time, they can not get a decent job because they're not smart enough. I think since this article is just a story, there can't be any biased information. However, it's very clever to write these stories on the internet because since this is one of the most used mass media available, thousands of people will be reading this, incouraging them to keep trying hard and accomplish their goal. I think this is how mass media can deliver their theme or the message.

Poverty; Photography Jessica Park

http://www.clintonfein.com/images/pieces/trodd-walker-evans-01.jpg
This picture is taken by one of the famous photographer Walker Evans.
He is well known for his works that shows rural poverty in Great Depression.
I think the picture of his own family titled, "Bud Fields and His Family" taken in
Hale County, Alabama, strongly illustrate the atmosphere of the era.

Through their face expression, the place, and the clothes shown in the picture
prove me how desperate and miserable the situation was in Great Depression.
Especially the face expression of the kid standing between the parents makes me feel
something more than just looking at her. I can not find any hope and dream through her eyes
evern though all the children in her age suppose to have full of shining future in their eyes and smiles.
It was the poverty that have stolen her happiness from not only her but also her family.
Since most of us are living in our lives with affluece and wealth, it is hard to be in those people's shoes,
who is struggle from poverty. However we should always be aware there is another side in our world
more than we usually see and experience. Therefore we should always be glad with what we have.

Chris - Internet - Poverty.

As I surf the net, i found an article, http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/20/beck.cities/index.html. This article is about how cities like detroit, michigan, and buffalo, New York has about at least a third of people who are in poverty. However, these countries, which have many people in poverty, their governments or the politicians, are not helping them get out of poverty. As their duty, they should be making sure that everyone is being safe and have at least a shelter to live in. I can not disagree with this article because I am from michigan, and i lived very close to detroit. I've seen many people sleep on the streets, get in fights, or steal and get arrested. This is because the government or the politician is not doing a good job.

By the writer's tone, I can see that the writer is strongly against the person in charge. (We've talked a lot about "change" in this country recently, but there's a much more important catchphrase that we've neglected: "All politics is local." Maybe instead of focusing so much on who we put in charge of our country, we should focus more on who we put in charge of our cities) I think the writer is not biased and I think he has a background or an experience from the past that really motivated him to write this article and try to take action. By writing this article, many people can watch this mass media and be affected by it and change their thoughts or opinions. I thought that this was more of a persuasive article to convince the citizens to make a right choice in picking their government, or a message to the government or the politician to do what is right and help to people who are in poverty. When I saw this, I was also convinced because, like i said, there shouldn't be people in poverty and we should help out; this is what the government or the politicians should do as a representative.

Poverty: Music, by Lucky

I listened to "Declan Galbraith - Tell me why"(http://video.cyworld.com/13830711) its a song sang by a 1o year old boy. the song contains a strong message asking why there are people suffering from poverty and war. In the song he describes the world that he dreamed about and how much it is different when we wakes out of his dream. The music is actually played with a video. The video shows Declan( the singer) in the middle and he is surrounded in black background. As he sings the chorus, many suffering children's faces appear one by one. The music seems to be very effective in its way to deliver the message. It has no bias signs or emphasized events.

The media is unimaginably strong as it delivers strong emotions to the listener. The fact that a "young boy" sings the music puts a feeling of shame and embrassement to the listener. As most adults haven't cared or thought about the children suffering from poverty and war. Tell me why (why, why do we never learn)
Can someone tell us why we let the forest burn?
(why, why do we say we care)
Tell me why(why, why do we stand and stare), these lyrics emphasize the feelings of the wrtier and the singer. They bring up thoughts within us that we begin to wonder what they have done. Also the fact that the children's faces come up is another strong factor that makes the music powerful. I think most of the listeners to this music will at least have an emotional shock and will put them to a "thinking sleep."

Chris - most influencial media.

Personally, I think the most influencial media is Internet. As many people know and use, internet is one of the most used technology. I think there's nothing missing in internet, which means that everything can be found somewhere, if one looks close enough. A website called naver, always have a latest news whether related to political issues, games, celebrities, or others. It keeps my in touch with the world and what's going on. It's also very addicting and makes me want the surf more, finding more information. Therefore, I say internet is the best source of mass media.

Lucky: The Most Influencial Media

Out of all the mass media, i strongy feel that the internet is the most influential. There is the radio, Tv and others, but internet seems to be the most simple and the easiest way to find information. Often times I open my web browser and see hot news. Then i would click the icon to see more information, which will lead me to another hot issue and i can go on for hours. Web surfing is never boring or complicating and therefore it is the strongest and the most dangerous mass media. There are often bad or incorrect information that is told. Also children imitate other people's actions or behaviours. For example, Youtube is used internationally and many different and interesting actions are posted on it. Therefore Many kids and students face danger. Interent is also a place of criticism, people create their Id name for a website and criticize other people on behalf of his web nick name. Although there are some bad effects of internet it is one of the best inventions ever. Due to internet information is easily spread world wide and it developed human society to another level. As internet is both used as a good and bad technology, people should think once again what they are going to do with the interent before they use it.

Jessica: the most influential media

I think the media that has the biggest impact on our lives is
FILM, because it has a visual effects that can grab people's interests.
In my case, going to movie is one of my favorite hobbies to do on weekend,
because I enjoy watching different kinds of stories and by watching it, I can
experience in second hand many new things that I would not happen in my real life.
As we watch movies, we concentrate on the them cooberated with certain massage or issue
that the movie creator attemps to convey.
With a lot of effects used in creating movie, we can remember the contents
of some movies for a long time.

Mass Media: Theatre by Lucky

Theatre is a mass media that is always performed lived and therefore often times it is more influencing and persuading. Theatre has been one of the longest forms of media, since it began in the greek civilization. There are many different ways to perform Theatre and according to Peter Brook, a theatre practitioner, stated that theatre had no limits in style of presenting. There are so many creative ways that persuade the audience in a different way. Through many years, a hand full of artists tried to find the true purpose of theatre. out of many possibilities Peter Brook once again stated that theatre is "a magnifying glass, a search light or a place of confrontation." In another words a place of renewal of life. Theatre is a play that people find to get new inspirations into their life. Planning to watch theatre can look simple. Buying the ticket, sitting in the assigned seat and just watching. However, unlike TV theatre values extreme amount of theories, symbols and meanings. Often times they are hidden like the parables and to find that the audience will have to be engaged and focused. As it is a very strong media, it should be directed and rehearsed carefully in order to secure the meaning and the purpose.

Chris - internet

Internet - Internet is a network that is connected to most of the world. It allows the users to watch videos, play games, chat, and others. Companies usually post advertisements to advertise their products, or the newspaper company posts news on the internet. This is because there are so many users that uses the internet and it's considered one of the most used mass media out so far. There is hardly anything that's not on the internet. All the user needs is a computer and an internet connection on the computer. Also, since there's everything on the internet, as long as one is old enough to read, internet is for everyone. However, people in the back days have a hard time using the computer because they didn't have a computer back in the days. The user will know how to turn on computer, surf webs, read, and type. I think users in today's century have a much easier time using the internet since they grew up in a technological days.
