chris - poverty - film/music

This time i want to look at a movie called 8 mile. It's a really famous movie known to many teenagers, especially rappers. It's about a white rapper named Eminem. He's really known for being one of the original "white" rapper. What's special about him is he got out of the poverty cycle by rapping, which this movie is about.

To be honest, I haven't watched the whole movie, but I did read the review from http://www.starpulse.com/Movies/8_Mile/Summary/

Eminem grew up in a town where there were mostly blacks, since it is the 8mile, growing up in a trailer house. He was considered a "white trash" being a white person in the neighborhood. At first, he didn't like to rap or shall i say, he was considered horrible since he couldn't rap on the stage. However, later he was beaten up by a group of black people. Because of this, he felt to anger to revenge those guys, and the ideas that he thought up, he made rap songs with them. Then he saw that his friends had sex with eminem's girl friend, and eminem beats them up. His friends got mad and went to a crew asking for them to beat eminem up. In front of eminem's daughter, eminem was beat up with a gun on the guys hand. Although he didn't want her to see it, she did. After this, eminem got really mad and went to a rap battle, and in the rap battle, he destroys the three men in the crew with his words. Then he was recruited by dr.dre and eventually gets out of poverty, the ghetto, and starts a new life.

This is a perfect example of a mass media that's about poverty. The reason why it's perfect is because first of all, Eminem, one of the most famous rapper, is the main character of this movie, attracting many teenagers and rappers. It's just like other movies such as pirates of the carabean, where johnny depp comes out. Many people are interested in how he will act and what the movie will be about feature depp as a main character. Also, a non fictional story that's about a person growing in the ghetto who turned out famous, is very rare. This makes the people even more excited to see the movie. Also, the best reason is it sends out a perfect real life example of a person in poverty, and what it can happen or will happen to people living in poverty

Poverty: Internet, by Lucky

http://www.poverty.com/index.html

This website is a organization that informs people the seriousness of poverty and diseases all around the world. it mainly informs people about poverty, aids, pneumonia, diarrhea, tuberculosis, mlaria and measles. For every disease and problem, there is about 3 paragraphs explaining the problem and the solution. There is also a link to solution, more information and what you can do. The organization seems to be a well organized community that shares good and reliable information.

My favorite part of the website is a world map, displaying the death of children and adults due to poverty. there is also a map for every disease and it is updated every second. the pictures and the names are only representational and does not show the names and faces of real people. The photographs are computer composites of multiple individuals. However even if it is not real it has a major impact on the audience. When i first entered the website and saw increasing numbers of death due to poverty every second, i was shocked and came to realize the reality of poverty. Many people just think of poverty as not being able to eat much or living in a small home. But this website breaks that assumption and shows that people are dying every second due to poverty and that we should do something about it. In overall, the site seems really valuable and effective in introducing poverty.

This music by elvis preslin is a great example of a mass media that deals with poverty. The title is called in the ghetto, which tells me that it's going to be about some poor person. It starts off by talking about how the baby is born in a bad environment, parent's who live in a "ghetto" place. Then, it talks about if the child is not supported enough, he/she will turn out spoiled and be angry someday. There is one section where he says the kid buys a gun, steals a car, but get caught, and his mom is sad. I think this is a typical thing where if one's in a poverty cycle, these are the typical things that they do to make money. Then, the other "ghetto" people kills the man, with his gun on his hand. However, when he dies, another born in the ghetto. This means that there are people born in the ghetto while at the same time, there are people getting killed. This send out what the life of people living in the ghetto is like.

Also, this song was written by THE elvis preslin, who is one of the most famous rock star in the history. There is no way that this song is from the underground, thousands of people have heard it, and it was sang infront of thousands of people, live. This is a great way to deliver message to many people because if one is a true fan, they read the lyrics, think about it, and reflect it. I think many people shoul've gotten the message.

JESSICA (unfinished)

This shocking picture of North Korean woman show the crucial reality in the country. Her boney arms are about to break, her chests are shrinked and her face and hair are all massy. It shows how she would probably hasn't been eating for a long time. There are a lot of people like her in Noth Korea due to the severe poverty and I often have been seen this harsh reality from TV and pictures from newspapers. However the picture I found for the posting gave me the most shocking impression, since the woman have nothing to hide and nothing to taken away.
Through the picture, I realized how i was carefree with the people who live not far away from me. Eventhough North Korea is considered as a different nation, we are all standing on the same land and we all belong to same family. We need to understand their struggle and pain eventhough we have never gotten through what they have.

JESSICA

This is the picture of Indonasian women carrying the plastic jerrycans after collecting water from a dried lake. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in Switzerland, less than 3 percent of the world's water is fresh and the world is finally running out of water. However it is the third world countires who face with the problem at the first hand. The people in the countries with high poverty rate, such as Indonasia, die every year from diseases associated with the lack of safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation. They have no access to safe water today which used to be abandant in the past. Since purchasing fresh water vendors or installing adequate water pipe requires significantly high price compare to their income, it is almost impossible to escape from the water problem. It is ridiculous that they are using tremendously less amount of water then us in developed country, they are still struggling from severe water shortage.
People like us don't acknowledge the seriousness of water shortage since we are easily access to the water. As soon as we trun a tab water starts to pour out from it and we don't face any difficulties unless the tab is broken. We even can adjust the temperature! But what about the women in the picture? They could not even imagene life with drinking fresh water or taking shower in nice hot water. Poverty incooperates with water shotage, and eventually choking innocent people.

Poverty: Internet, by Lucky

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=7UVa8M0QLts&feature=related

This video clip from youtube is very similar to the one that i have posted before. The clip is about Phil Joanou in Arusha, who took a visit to africa in order to fight against poverty. In the video he proclaims that he has seen miracles and changes happening in africa that things were getting better. He also supports to make poverty history and he gives statical review. he states that over 1million kids more now attend school and over 5million people have been saved from the world's no.1 killing disease, malaria. He gives direct examples that proves the fight against poverty is becoming victorious.

He incourages everyone seeing the video to stand up, to fight against poverty and the goverment. Evaluating the value of the video, it is very influential since it is a primary source. The man speaks for himself and gives direct influence taht he has seen and felt. While watching the video i believed him that mircles are happening, however i began to wonder how can he prove that? maybe there are paper works and goverment documents, but he does not include it in his video. This is a limitation, which stops the source from being more emotionally powerful. However in the other hand, it may not be about the stats every sentence he pushes us to stand up against poverty by being the great generation. He clearly states his message "campaigns are creating real change for good." the source is easy to grasp and it is effective to some extent.

chris poverty film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145487/

The movie poverty is not really about poverty, however, the character lives in a poverty environment, and is in poverty. At first, he tries to get some money by doing restling, since he has super powers. Also, right after the event, spider man doesn't get enough money even though he won. Spider man lets a criminal set free to revenge on the man who didn't give him enough money, but the criminal shoots spider man's uncle. Would all of this happened if he was in poverty? This happened because they didn't have money. Therefore, because his uncle died due o crime, spider man decided to take action and save the day. For this movie, I don't think many people was "touched" or moved, because that's not what the main part of the movie was about. However, I do believe that the reason why peter became a spiderman is because of his poverty. It also shows the difficulty of escaping. Peter was mad because he didn't recieve enough money, and he had to do restling to recive money and make some profit.
